Why You Feel Emotionally Overwhelmed
And What Therapy Actually Teaches You
(by a counselling psychologist in Mumbai)
If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you’ve at some point in life felt like everything affects you at an intensity that feels too much to handle and maybe question what’s wrong with you… keep reading and check if this feels like something you experience, maybe
- A small comment ruins your day
- A minor conflict leaves you overthinking for hours
- Stress feels constant, even when life looks “fine” from the outside
So many adults between 20s and 40s come to therapy saying something like “I don’t know what’s wrong with me or why I feel so much, I just can’t handle things.”
The truth here is that nothing is “wrong” with you for feeling. What’s missing is something no one ever taught you. Hi, thank you for being here. I’m Hartika, a counselling psychologist based in Mumbai. In this blog, I’m sharing a research backed understanding of what emotional overwhelm is
Emotional Overwhelm Is Not a Personality Flaw or a Part of Your Personality
Growing up, so many of us have never been taught:
- How to identify emotions
- When discomfort shows up, how to express it without guilt or anger
- How to calm our nervous system
- How to respond to our emotions instead of react through them
So when life pressures naturally increase and you have more things to navigate like career stress, relationships, your expectations and wishes, family expectations, your system gets overloaded. This overload shows up as:
- Anxiety that feels constant or unexplained
- Emotional outbursts or emotional numbness
- Low self-confidence and self-doubt
- Difficulty saying no or listening to your own capacity
- Relationship conflicts repeating
Why “Being Strong” or “Positive” Doesn’t Work Here
So many of us have tried to cope with this by:
These strategies might work in the short-term. And in the long-term they increase emotional pressure. Unprocessed emotions don’t really disappear. They might show up as anxiety, irritability, exhaustion, or sadness, unexplained aches or pains, difficulty managing or holding relationships.
What Therapy Actually Helps You Learn
Therapy is not just about talking about problems. It is also a place which helps you build emotional skills, such as:
You deserve help long before things become “unmanageable.” You can also explore our FAQs to learn more about some concerns people have when starting therapy & our blog what happens in the first therapy session to soothe your curiosity and make an informed decision before starting.
When Emotional Overwhelm Is a Sign to Seek Therapy
You may benefit from therapy if:
- You feel emotionally exhausted most days
- Anxiety or sadness interferes with work or relationships
- You feel misunderstood or disconnected with yourself and others
- You’ve “tried everything” but still feel stuck
If you’ve tried coping strategies but still feel stuck in overthinking, emotional overwhelm, or constant tension, it doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong.
Many adults I work with understand their anxiety intellectually. They’ve read, researched, and tried to manage it on their own. What changes in therapy isn’t effort. It’s having a space where emotions don’t need to be controlled, minimized, or handled alone. It’s about understanding what’s happening in your mind and body, and figuring out what kind of support would actually be of help to you.
Self-Reflection Prompts
Use these to deepen your awareness:
- What am I feeling right now – without trying to fix it?
- What happened today that drained my energy the most?
- What is in my control today?
- What small act of care could help right now?
